[!abstract] The end of the law is faith in Christ, which the Jews refusing to submit to, cannot be justified.

1
EN Brethren, the will of my heart, indeed and my prayer to God is for them unto salvation.
^1
2
EN For I bear them witness that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
^2
3
EN For they, not knowing the justice of God and seeking to establish their own, have not submitted themselves to the justice of God.
^3
4
EN For the end of the law is Christ: unto justice to everyone that believes.
^4
[!note]- The justice of God…
That is, the justice which God gives us through Christ; as on the other hand, the Jews’ own justice is, that which they pretended to by their own strength, or by the observance of the law, without faith in Christ.
5
EN For Moses wrote that the justice which is of the law: The man that shall do it shall live by it.
^5
6
EN But the justice which is of faith, speaks thus: Say not in your heart: Who shall ascend into heaven? That is to bring Christ down;
^6
7
EN or who shall descend into the deep? That is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.
^7
8
EN But what says the scripture? The word is near you; even in your mouth and in your heart. This is the word of faith, which we preach.
^8
9
LA Quia si confitearis in ore tuo Dominum Jesum, et in corde tuo credideris quod Deus illum suscitavit a mortuis, salvus eris.
EN* For if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him up from the dead, you shall be saved.
^9
10
EN For, with the heart, we believe unto justice: but, with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
^10
11
EN For the scripture says: Whosoever believes in him shall not be confounded.
^11
12
EN For there is no distinction of the Jew and the Greek: for the same is Lord over all, rich unto all that call upon him.
^12
13
LA Omnis enim quicumque invocaverit nomen Domini, salvus erit.
EN For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
^13
[!note]- Thou shalt be saved…
To confess the Lord Jesus, and to call upon the name of the Lord (verse 13) is not barely the professing a belief in the person of Christ; but moreover, implies a belief of his whole doctrine, and an obedience to his law; without which, the calling him Lord will save no man. St. Matt. 7.21.
14
GR πῶς οὖν ἐπικαλέσωνται εἰς ὃν οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν; πῶς δὲ πιστεύσωσιν οὗ οὐκ ἤκουσαν; πῶς δὲ ἀκούσωσιν χωρὶς κηρύσσοντος;
EN How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? Or how shall they believe him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
^14
15
LA quomodo vero prædicabunt nisi mittantur? sicut scriptum est: Quam speciosi pedes evangelizantium pacem, evangelizantium bona!
EN And how shall they preach unless they be sent, as it is written: How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, of them that bring glad tidings of good things?
^15
[!note]- Unless they be sent…
Here is an evident proof against all new teachers, who have all usurped to themselves the ministry without any lawful mission, derived by succession from the apostles, to whom Christ said [John 20:21] As my Father hath sent me, I also send you.
16
GR ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντες ὑπήκουσαν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ: Ἠσαΐας γὰρ λέγει, κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν;
LA Sed non omnes obediunt Evangelio. Isaias enim dicit: Domine, quis credidit auditui nostro?
EN But all do not obey the gospel. For Isaiah says: Lord, who has believed our report?
^16
17
EN Faith then comes by hearing; and hearing by the word of Christ.
^17
18
LA Sed dico: Numquid non audierunt? Et quidem in omnem terram exivit sonus eorum, et in fines orbis terræ verba eorum.
EN But I say: Have they not heard? Yes, verily: Their sound has gone forth into all the earth: and their words unto the ends of the whole world.
^18
19
LA Sed dico: Numquid Israël non cognovit? Primus Moyses dicit: Ego ad æmulationem vos adducam in non gentem: in gentem insipientem, in iram vos mittam.
EN But I say: Hath not Israel known? First, Moses says: I will provoke you to jealousy by that which is not a nation: by a foolish nation I will anger you.
^19
20
LA Isaias autem audet, et dicit: Inventus sum a non quærentibus me: palam apparui iis qui me non interrogabant.
EN But Isaiah is bold, and says: I was found by them that did not seek me. I appeared openly to them that asked not after me.
^20
21
EN But to Israel he says: All the day long have I spread my hands to a people that believes not and contradicts me.
